Put a Nikon lens and a 2" filter on your ZWO cooled camera
Why we like the ZWO filter drawer for Nikon lenses:
- Lens adapter and filter slot in one: a Nikon F bayonet on the front, a 2" filter drawer in the middle and an M42 thread on the back, so one part turns a camera lens into a wide-field astrograph with a filter.
- Back focus already worked out: 29mm of drawer plus the 17.5mm back focus of a ZWO cooled camera is exactly 46.5mm, Nikon F's flange distance, so lenses reach infinity focus with no spacers.
- Wide fields with a nebula filter: pair a 135mm lens with an ASI2600MC Pro and a duo-band filter and you get about 10° × 6.6°, enough for the whole Cygnus or Orion region.
- Worth knowing: it fits ZWO cameras with 17.5mm back focus, not the GT series. Full-frame ASI6200 and ASI2400 cameras use the included M54M-M42F adapter.
The ZWO Filter Drawer for Nikon Lens (FD-Nikon) connects a Nikon F-mount camera lens to a ZWO cooled astronomy camera and holds one 2" mounted filter in a pull-out holder. ZWO lists it for its ASI1600, 294, 183, 071, 533, 2600, 6200 and 2400 cooled cameras, including the ASI533MC Pro and ASI2600MC Pro. It's 70mm across and 29mm thick.
Key specs: Nikon F lens bayonet · M42 × 0.75 male camera thread · 29mm thick (46.5mm with a 17.5mm ZWO camera) · holds one 2" mounted filter (M48 × 0.75) · double magnets plus lock screw · M54M-M42F adapter included

What you can image
- Big nebula regions: the North America and Pelican nebulae, the Heart and Soul, Barnard's Loop and the Orion complex fit in one frame at 85 to 135mm.
- Milky Way star fields: the Sagittarius and Scutum star clouds and Rho Ophiuchi with a UV/IR cut filter.
- Andromeda and the Pleiades: M31 fills a good part of the frame at 200mm on an APS-C sensor.
How it works
Thread the drawer's M42 male side into your camera, mount the lens on the Nikon bayonet, and slide a 2" filter in its holder into the drawer. Magnets pull the holder into place and the side lock screw takes up any play. Focus manually on a bright star, ideally with a Bahtinov mask.

Using a third-party filter? ZWO says its cell must be under 50.8mm in diameter and under 7.5mm tall, with an M48 × 0.75 thread no longer than 2.7mm.
What to add for the best results
- Extra 2" filter holders: keep each filter in its own holder.
- A 2" filter: the ZWO Duo-Band filter (2" size) or Optolong L-eXtreme (2") for nebulae, and the ZWO IR Cut filter (2") for star fields and galaxies.
- A camera: the ASI533MC Pro (square sensor, easy framing) or ASI2600MC Pro (APS-C, wider fields).
- ASIAIR Plus: runs the camera, plate solving and a tracking mount from your phone.

ZWO Filter Drawer for Nikon Lens FAQ
Which ZWO cameras does it fit?
ZWO cooled cameras with 17.5mm back focus: the ASI1600, 294, 183, 533, 071, 2600, 6200 and 2400. It doesn't fit the GT series. The full-frame ASI6200 and ASI2400 connect through the included M54M-M42F adapter.
Which Nikon lenses work best?
Manual-focus lenses, or lenses with a manual aperture ring, are the easiest. Lenses without an aperture ring (Nikon G and E types) can't be stopped down on a simple adapter, so check before you buy one for this.
Will the lens reach infinity focus?
Yes. The drawer's 29mm plus the camera's 17.5mm equals Nikon F's 46.5mm flange distance. A filter shifts focus slightly, which the lens's focus ring takes up.
Nikon or Canon EOS drawer?
Buy the one that matches the lenses you own. The EOS version is 26.5mm thick to match Canon EF's 44mm flange distance; otherwise they work the same way.
